DESIGN COSMOLOGY/
AI AS COSMOTECHNICS

A laboratory for design research complementing AI with situated and embodied knowledge
AI as Cosmotechnics takes its starting point from a term coined by philosopher Yuk Hui in The Question Concerning Technology in China: An Essay in Cosmotechnics (2016). Hui argues that technology has never been a neutral, universal instrument applied equally across all cultures: every technical tradition unites a cosmic order — a way of understanding the universe and our place within it — with a moral order and with concrete practices, materials, and places. Cosmotechnics names this unity: technology is always embedded in a specific cosmology, locality, and embodied way of life. Modern technology, including AI, is often presented as universal and culturally neutral. Its designers nonetheless build assumptions into it — about how we relate to reality, what forms of intelligence count as intelligence, and how we produce knowledge for building the future. Hui's call for a plurality of cosmotechnics, placing Chinese, Indigenous, and other technical-cosmological traditions alongside the dominant Western one, opens a space for design practices that ground technology in locality, materiality, and embodied experience.

This raises a fundamental question for design education: how does AI meet forms of knowledge rooted in embodied perception, situated experience, material sensibility, collective work, and the production of meaning?

CONTENT
This course treats AI as a design medium and as a cosmotechnical condition to be examined through practice. Participants work with AI directly, alongside site research, embodied observation, material experimentation, and collective reflection. These processes lead to concrete design artifacts — objects, spatial devices, and small architectures. The artifacts function as research devices in their own right, making visible what different forms of intelligence can produce together, where they diverge, and what kinds of knowledge emerge through their interaction.
Cosmotechnics here is a practical method: participants construct and test situated practice through actual acts of designing and making. The aim is to create a situation in which what AI can and cannot replace is tested through design, embodiment, and making.

FORMATS
Three input sessions (lecture / talk format) run across the block, complemented with an additional Design Laboratory workshop for participants who want to apply the ideas directly to their own project as the block unfolds.

INPUT SESSIONS
Thu Oct  08 — AI FOR DESIGN RESEARCH / Free Intro Session
Thu Oct  22 — AI FOR DESIGN RESEARCH / Input Session & Talk 1 — How do we consciously use AI for design research?
Thu Oct  29 — AI FOR DESIGN RESEARCH / Input Session & Talk 2 — How is AI building worlds models? How can we apply AI with cosmotechnnics?
Thu Nov 05 — AI FOR DESIGN RESEARCH / Input Session & Talk 3 — Speculative outlook: What is the future of design research in the age of AI?

DESIGN LABORATORY
Thu  Nov  12
— AI FOR DESIGN RESEARCH LABORATORY  / Workshop 1 — How do use AI for your design project?
Thu  Nov  19 —  AI FOR DESIGN RESEARCH LABORATORY / Workshop 2 — Presentations/reviews
Participants work with AI directly on their own design project — through site research, embodied observation, material experimentation, and collective reflection — producing concrete design artifacts (objects, spatial devices, small architectures) that make visible what AI and other forms of intelligence can produce together, and where they diverge.
