DESIGN INTELLIGENCE
A space is never neutral. It conditions how the people inside it think, recover, decide, and connect — often below the threshold of anyone noticing.
Good design solves for function and form. Design Intelligence goes further: it asks what a space actually does to the people inside it, and designs deliberately for that effect. It draws on environmental psychology, embodied cognition, and neuroarchitecture, together with a design tradition — spanning cultures and centuries — built on a single premise: to make a space is to make a world.

This distinction matters most where performance has quietly outgrown conventional design. Wellness resorts, retreat destinations, and organizations moving from a health agenda toward one of meaning and consciousness are asking a genuinely new question of their environments — and the field has not yet caught up with an equally rigorous design response. This is where Design Intelligence carries the most weight, and where our own research and practice have been built. The same intelligence extends naturally into cultural institutions, collective spaces, and workplaces designed for genuine presence rather than mere output.

What if a workspace could have the quality of a forest? What if we could regenerate while working — not despite our environment, but through it?

This is not a utopian question. It is a practical one. The atmospheric sensitivity we bring to natural environments doesn't disappear when we walk into an office, a meeting room, a school, a hospital. It is still operating — silently, continuously.
Spatial intelligence is the practice of becoming aware of what space is already doing — its resonances, its atmospheric conditions, its effects on collective energy and shared thinking — and learning to engage with it deliberately. It draws on environmental psychology, embodied cognition, and neuroarchitecture, as well as the older knowledge that architects and spatial thinkers across cultures have always carried: that to make a space is to make a world.

In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital space, there is an urgent counterweight: practices that train body and mind to perform with full awareness in physical environments — and environments designed to support that awareness. Spatial intelligence is that practice.
BACKGROUND

This consultancy draws on two decades of architectural practice and research — from early work at OMA New York and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, through design-build research directed at Hong Kong University and Yokohama National University's Y-GSA, to leading the Master of Advanced Architecture program at ETH Zürich. It is grounded equally in a contemplative spatial practice rooted in the Japanese tea ceremony, developed through TRANSFORMA — direct, embodied research into how space, ritual, and atmosphere shape presence.

APPROACH

Atmospheric Sensitivity
Reading what a space is already doing — to attention, nervous systems, and the quality of what becomes possible between people.

Spatial Resonance
Understanding space as a field shaped by design — and developing the capacity to shape that field with intention.

Embodied Agency
Moving occupants from passive inhabitants to conscious participants in every environment where they lead, create, and decide.

SERVICES
Spatial Assessment
A structured reading of an existing environment against the principles of Design Intelligence — atmosphere, material, acoustic and light conditions, the sequencing of movement through a space, and the effect all of this has on attention, recovery, and collective presence. The assessment identifies what a space is already doing to the people inside it, intentionally or not, and where its capacity is going unused.

Design Intervention
Direct redesign of layout, materiality, and atmospheric quality, guided by the assessment's findings. The aim is a measurable shift in how a space performs — supporting sustained attention, genuine rest, and the conditions under which transformative or contemplative experience becomes possible, rather than working against them by default.

Training Workshops
Spatial literacy built directly into teams and leadership: the capacity to read what an environment is doing, and to inhabit it with full awareness rather than passing through it unchanged. A well-designed space performs only as well as the people using it know how to receive it — this closes that gap.

Combined Programs
Design Intervention and Training Workshops delivered as one integrated engagement, for organizations ready to shift both the physical environment and the culture that inhabits it. Experience shows the two reinforce each other: a redesigned space raises what training can achieve, and a trained team draws far more from a redesigned space than either delivered alone.

RATES
Engagements are scoped individually, from a single-space assessment to a full property redesign. Rates depend on project size and scope — get in touch to discuss your space.
